Graduate students and post-docs from former TeraNano PIRE partner institutions in Japan, or other countries, are welcome to apply to Rice University for unpaid, non-credit bearing, short-term research internships of 6 – 12 months in laboratories at Rice University. Students may be placed into host research laboratories within the George R. Brown School of Engineering or the Wiess School of Natural Sciences. Internships are not guaranteed and can only be arranged on a space-available basis with priority given to students from labs that the Kono Group or related departments/groups have active international research collaborations with.
To Apply: Interested students or their home university research advisor, should contact Prof. Junichiro Kono to inquire about the program via email at kono@rice.edu. In this email, they should include an overview of the research topic/area they are interested in doing research in at Rice University and the name of any potential host professors/labs. Please also include the preferred dates/duration of internship and a copy of the student’s current CV or resume.
Self-Funding and J-1 Visa Required: No funding for this program is provided by Rice University. Students must be fully-funded through any combination of home university/lab, scholarship/fellowship, or personal support and must show proof of financial support of at least $2,000 per month for the duration of time they will be at Rice University. To be able to do research at Rice University, all graduate students must enter the United States on a J-1 Exchange Visitor Visa as outlined by Rice’s Office of International Students and Scholars (OISS). The visa waiver program cannot be used for students who will be conducting research at Rice University.
